Morris Plains, NJ Sewer Replacement: Top 5 Reasons to Replace Your Sewer Line

Monday, February 25th, 2013

The hygiene and comfort of your home environment depends upon the capacity of your sewage system to adequately dispose of waste water. The sewer line is the large pipe that diverts waste water from your home. It is the primary connection in your waste disposal system and may eventually require replacement. To discuss your options, call the Morris Plains, NJ sewer line replacement experts at Resolve Rooter.

  1. Strong smell or visible sewage in your yard. This indicates a serious problem with your sewage disposal system. There are a variety of probable reasons for its occurrence. Call a professional immediately.
  2. Root penetration. The trees in your yard have extensive underground root systems that disperse both vertically and horizontally throughout your yard. It sometimes happens that a root will exert enough pressure against a sewer main to actually penetrate it. This can lead to all sorts of problems, and is a likely candidate for replacement.
  3. Collapsed main. This occurs when the sewer line collapses under the weight of the ground, either due to changes in soil movement, erosion or vegetation. If your sewer line is very old, it may have just deteriorated.
  4. Cracking. Although not a fully-collapsed pipe, a cracked pipe can still leak sewage into the surrounding soil and may eventually collapse.
  5. Clogging. Any pipe can become clogged and your sewer line is no exception. This is the least problematic of the 5 reasons, but the clog may be so severe as to require a pipe-bursting method.

Sewer line replacement used to involve digging up the entire path of the line, but today, trenchless technology is available. Trenchless involves feeding a temporary inflatable bladder through the length of your old pipe. When inflated, an epoxy form creates a new pipe within the old one. Depending on the reason for replacement, this tube can also be fitted with a pipe-bursting cone that precedes the new pipe.

To find out more about your sewer line replacement options, call Resolve Rooter. Our sewer line experts will use various diagnostic devices, like video inspection, to determine what’s wrong with your sewage system in Morris Plains, NJ. Call Resolve Rooter today.

Ardmore PA Sewer Line Replacement FAQs

Monday, October 29th, 2012

Sewer line replacement is a big project, and there are a lot of different considerations you should keep in mind. Here are some commonly asked questions we get from our Ardmore PA customers:

How Long Can My Sewer Line Last?

This is obviously a very relative question. It can depend on many factors including soil composition, where you live and other unknown factors dealing with how the line was installed. 40 years is a rough estimate of when it might need to be replaced. But even if you have new plumbing and sewer lines in your home, it might still be attached to original piping.

What Causes Sewer Line Damage?

While disasters like earthquakes and the normal passage of time can cause sewer line damage, the most common is tree roots. Roots most often find their way in to your pipes through the joints which if your house is old are made of iron or clay. As the trees on your property grow, their roots search for the best source of water. Your sewer line is an obvious place for them to go. Slowly but surely they wedge themselves in and can break or clog your sewer line.

Will the Plumber Have to Dig Up My Yard or Driveway?

With traditional sewer line replacement procedures, a backhoe will be brought in to tear up your yard, driveway and, possibly the sidewalk in front of your house if you have it. However, using trenchless technology, our Ardmore PA plumbers are able to replace your sewer line with little damage to your yard.

What is Trenchless Sewer Line Replacement?

There are two methods for trenchless sewer line replacement: pipe lining and pipe bursting.

  • Pipe Lining – In this technique, only a small access hole is dug on your property to get to the pipe. Next, a deflated piece of resin-lined pipe is pulled through your old pipe. Then it is inflated and allowed to dry against your old pipe. This method will shrink the diameter of your pipe by about 1/4 of an inch.
  • Pipe Bursting – In this method, a hydraulic pump is used to pull a piece of new, flexible pipe through your old pipe. As the new pipe is pulled through, it destroys the old pipe and replaces it.

Lining and bursting are equally as durable. If you have any concerns about your sewer line or would like to learn more about sewer line replacement services in Ardmore PA and the surrounding area, then contact Resolve Rooter today.

Morris Plains Plumbing Guide: Signs of Water and Sewer Line Problems

Monday, August 13th, 2012

Most people in Morris Plains don’t think a lot about their water or sewer line. But when something goes wrong with either one of them, you have a big problem on your hands. Educating yourself about these types of plumbing disasters can help you catch signs of a problem early.

Broken Water Lines

Water lines that come into a building can break at any time.  Water lines can be caused by a pipe that froze during winter months, cracked and began to leak under the house, or perhaps a clog caused water pressure to build up to levels which finally made the pipe burst.  When you first notice a broken pipe or a burst pipe, the first thing to do is turn off the water supply to the building to prevent additional water damage from occurring to surrounding structures and items.  Then it is time to call the water line replacement experts at Resolve Rooter.

Broken Sewer Lines

Sewer lines can break for many of the same reasons as water lines. These include tree root infiltration, pipe corrosion, and extreme temperatures. Signs of a broken sewer line include a sewer smell, sewer flies, and damp spots in your yard. If you notice any of these signs, the best thing you can do is call a Morris Plains plumber who offers video pipe inspection services. They will be able to send a camera down your sewer line to determine the exact cause of the problem and the best way to fix it.

Frozen Pipes

Another common plumbing disaster is frozen pipes.  During the colder months of the year water in pipes can easily freeze and expand, leading to a broken pipe and eventually resulting in water damage.  Preventing frozen pipes can be done through proper insulation of the areas surrounding where pipes are located, as well as insulating the pipes themselves. Extremely hot temperatures can also cause problems with pipes, so if you notice standing water on your lawn or drop on your water pressure during any time of year, call a plumber immediately to check for broken pipes.

Trenton Plumbing Guide: Components of Trenchless Sewer Line Replacement

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

Trenchless sewer line replacement is a relatively new procedure that is growing in popularity in Trenton. It is becoming more popular largely because it is less invasive and less time consuming – and therefore less expensive – than traditional methods of replacing a sewer line.

But what goes into the trenchless replacement process? There are four main components.

Component 1: Camera Inspection

Before starting the process of replacing the sewer line, your contracting crew will first use a special flexible camera to inspect the line. This allows them to determine just how much of the sewer line needs to be replaced, so they know where to drill the holes (Component #2) and how much pipe will be needed.

Component 2: Guide Holes

Once they have a visual on what they are doing, the crew will drill a small hole in the ground at either end of the section of the line that is to be replaced. These holes – much narrower than traditional trenches – go through the ground and into the surface of the pipe below.

Component 3: Specialized Cable

Through the holes, a special cable is run from one end of the damaged line, through the pipe to the other end. One end of the cable has a special bursting head attached to it, while the other end is attached to a device that will pull it through the line. This cable will act as the guide for the new pipe.

Component 4: Durable & Flexible Piping

Attached to the bursting head, following right behind the cable, will be a length of flexible but durable piping, usually high density polyethylene (HDPE). When the cable is pulled through the old line, the bursting head breaks open the old pipe from the inside, and the new pipe gets dragged in behind to replace it.

That is about all there is to it. Just like that, your Trenton home’s busted sewer line is replaced with a new, durable piece of material that will last for many years. To learn more, give Resolve Rooter a call today!

Doylestown Plumbing: Signs of Roots in Your Sewer Line

Monday, July 16th, 2012

Nobody installs a sewer line in Doylestown expecting that a tree root will work its way through the sturdy pipe to cause leaks and clogs. But, root growth is a powerful and often unpredictable process. Some tree roots can be many feet long, and even though the trunk is far away, the root can still go right through the sewage line in a matter of years.

Learn to identify the signs of roots damaging your sewer line in order to take proactive measures.

 1.       Occasional, unexplained toilet clogs

The occasional clogged toilet is nothing in and of itself. The source of the blockage could be anything from too much toilet paper to a misplaced stuffed animal, both of which can be solved with a good plunging. But, when clogs happen frequently and without explanation, then it is time to think about whether there is a problem in the sewer line that is clogging things up, such as a tree root.

2.       Drains backed up

If you experience more than one drain backing up at once, especially if you notice dirt backing up from the drain, that can also be a sign of a clogged or disrupted sewer line. An invasive tree root could be the culprit.

 3.       Water pooling on the lawn

Any time you notice unexplained pools of water on your lawn, there is cause for concern. Not only are these pools a breeding ground for termites, bacteria and other pests, they are usually an indicator of a larger problem, such as a broken sewer line. You see, when a sewer line ruptures or springs a leak, the contents start to leach through the soil and can collect at the top. So, if you notice water starting to collect with no apparent cause, it could be a root wreaking havoc in your sewer line.

4.       Foul water collecting anywhere

Water from a busted sewer line doesn’t have to just collect on your lawn. It could pool just about anywhere, including your basement of furnace room. What can tip you off that it is waste water from a sewer line that has been ruptured by a root is the smell. If the water smells bad, it’s probably from a sewage leak.

For any of these issues, call a Doylestown plumber to determine the source of the problem. It could be a root in your sewer line, but that’s just one possible explanation for the trouble.

New Hope Plumbing Tip: Trenchless Sewer Line Replacement Steps

Monday, July 9th, 2012

Replacing sewer lines can be a big project. It used to be that whatever was above your existing sewer line, including your driveway, steps, landscaping or your favorite trees, would have to be torn out. A trench would then be dug, a foot or two in width, all the way down to the sewer line to expose it. Once the job was completed the trench would be filled in and the soil raked over and seeded, leaving a mound of grassless dirt in your yard or a driveway in need of repair. You can still choose to have your New Hope sewer lines replaced this way, of course. With the trenchless technology available to us today, though, why would you want to?

Modern trenchless technology eliminates the need to expose your sewer line. When you call Resolve Rooter to replace your sewer line with our trenchless technology there are very few steps to the process, and they are minimally evasive to your property.

First we dig two small pits. One is dug at the starting point of the line into your home, and the other at its termination point in before connecting to the city sewer lines. When the job is finished these pits are filled back in. The process leaves so little damage to your property that it is hard to believe a job of this size was even performed on it.

Once the pits are dug it is time to hook up our hydraulic machine. Using about twenty tons of pressure this machine pulls a bursting cone through the existing line, which either bursts underground or is pulled out by the bursting cone. At the same time, the new sewer line is pulled into place by the machine.

Once the new sewer line is in place all that is left to do is cleaning up after ourselves. You can imagine that, compared to the trenching method, cleanup is a breeze after a trenchless sewer line replacement. The pits are filled in and we put down some seed after disassembling the machine that pulled your new sewer line into place.

Trenchless sewer line replacement is not always the most feasible option for this type of job. If you do decide to utilize this technology when you need new sewer or water lines installed in New Hope, call Resolve Rooter. Our team of plumbing professionals will get the job done quickly and conveniently, even by trenchless standards. Call us today for more information.

Richboro Sewer Line Replacement Tip: How Video Pipe Inspection Works

Monday, July 2nd, 2012

Due to the general inaccessibility of your Richboro plumbing system it can be difficult to pinpoint what exact problem you are experiencing and where the source of this problem is located. There is no better solution in the industry for these exact issues than to use video pipe inspection technology. Being able to visually inspect the insides of your plumbing system’s pipes, drainage and sewer lines is invaluable in accurately diagnosing a problem and making sure that it has been totally rectified. Here’s how it works.

A high resolution video camera is installed on a flexible rod. This rod is then fed directly into the pipe that is experiencing problems. By feeding the rod directly into the pipe your Richboro plumbing technician is able to examine its inner workings and actually see for himself any weaknesses in integrity, blockages, or problematic connections. The video pipe inspection process essentially removes any guesswork in figuring out the type and location of a problem within your plumbing system.

Because issues with your plumbing and sewer lines can develop deep within the system there is opportunity for them to go unnoticed until a major problem presents itself. This is exactly the type of situation that can be avoided with video pipe inspection. The images captured by the camera can be saved so that your plumbing specialists can review them later. This allows a thorough reading of the footage and a total understanding of the problem. There are even radio transmitters installed on the pipe camera to gauge the depth of problem sources.

The biggest advantage in repairing your plumbing system’s problem is to identify just what that problem is early on. This identification can be made less intrusively than ever thanks to video pipe inspection. In addition to accurately locating sources of problems and avoiding larger ones, video pipe inspection allows for extremely accurate quotes and estimates from your Richboro plumbing technician. With video inspection you don’t have to worry about being quoted a price only to find out it has doubled due to unexpected complications with the problem.

Save yourself time, money trouble. When you notice that your plumbing system is not performing the way it should be call for professional help right away. If you’re in the eastern Pennsylvania or New Jersey area, Resolve Rooter is here to assist you with any repairs or maintenance that your plumbing system may need. We can accurately pinpoint your source of trouble and will fix the situation quickly.
